Angie Bailey, creator of Texts from Mittens, shares her inspiration and experiences with cat humor and her feline muses

Angie Bailey has built a career imagining what cats would say if they could text their humans. As the creator of Texts from Mittens, she has spent years making cat lovers laugh through books, calendars, comics, and social media.

Introduction to Texts from Mittens

The concept of Texts from Mittens began with Angie's imagination of cats doing people things. She grew up in a silly family with lots of cats and would make up stories about what they did when no one was home. This imagination led to her writing cat humor, starting with her personal blog, Catladyland, where she shared funny stories and silly photos of her cats.

The Creation of Mittens

Angie's first book, Whiskerslist, was published in 2013, and then came Texts from Mittens in 2015. The first Texts from Mittens book was followed by Texts from Mittens: The Friends and Family Edition in 2019. Since 2016, Angie has also written an annual Mittens daily calendar. The comic became part of Catster around 2013 and ran for a couple of years, introducing more readers to Mittens' dramatic world.

The Characters Behind Texts from Mittens

The characters in Texts from Mittens came from Angie's imagination and weren't based on real people. However, the editor of her first book wanted images for a character guide, which led to the creation of characters like Grandma, Stumpy, Fiona, Earl, Drunk Patty, and the infamous tabby brothers. These characters were inspired by friends and their pets, and Angie's good friend Katy even posed for photos as Drunk Patty.

The Real Cats Behind the Comedy

Angie's cats have been a significant source of inspiration for her writing. Her current muses are Janet, a tortie, and Phoebe, a 22-year-old calico. Angie finds that her cats make it easy for her to come up with new ideas, and their personalities and antics often find their way into her writing. She believes that every cat she has shared her home with has contributed something to Mittens' personality or the stories she tells.

The Impact of Texts from Mittens

The Texts from Mittens community has grown significantly over the years, with loyal and funny readers who appreciate Angie's humor. She has received messages from readers who have found laughter and joy in the texts during difficult times, and she believes that bringing smiles and happiness is important. Angie is grateful for the Mittens community and the opportunity to share her cat humor with others.
