How a Tiny Tortie Cat Turned a Dog Person Into a Cat Lady

Mauren Kennedy, who grew up without cats, now shares her home with six rescue felines. Her online community, Cat Lady Tails, has attracted millions of followers who enjoy the antics of her cats.

It all began in 2013 when her roommate brought home an abandoned kitten found in a Walgreens parking lot. Mauren admits her initial reaction was not enthusiastic. The tiny tortoiseshell kitten, however, quickly won her over. She named the cat Gremlin, inspired by characters from Studio Ghibli films. A distinctive little blep, caused by an unusual jaw, became one of Gremlin's trademarks.

The Cat Distribution System

For several years, Gremlin was an only cat. Mauren's perspective changed as her aging dog, Shelby, began to slow down. She worried Gremlin would become lonely. This led her to a "Clear the Shelters" event, where she adopted an orange tabby named Calcifer.

She thought two cats would be enough. It was not. During the pandemic, a kitten named Jiji joined the family to help balance Calcifer's high energy. Later, while driving on a country road, Mauren spotted two long-haired kittens darting across the pavement. Those kittens became David Rose and Alexis Rose.

Mauren assumed five cats was the limit. A few years later, during a neighborhood walk, she found a skinny, panting calico cat. That cat, named Chihiro, completed the family.

Life with Six Personalities

Each cat in Mauren's home has a distinct personality. Calcifer is described as goofy. Jiji is clever and dramatic. David Rose kept his kitten-like face into adulthood, while Alexis Rose embodies classic tortitude. Chihiro is the newest member. Although Gremlin started it all, Mauren says it is the combination of all six personalities that makes her content relatable.

A Day in the Life

Mauren's days start early, typically between 5 and 6 a.m., prompted by six hungry cats. Her morning routine involves filling food bowls, feeding neighborhood cats, making coffee, and settling on the couch-often buried under cats. Bedtime has its own rituals. Sleeping arrangements usually involve a cat on her left side, several on her feet, and at least one planning the next morning's wake-up call.

Mauren is honest about the challenges of a multi-cat household. She jokes there is a reason most people stop at two or three cats. Moving to a larger home significantly improved the cats' relationships. She credits multiple litter boxes, cat trees, hideaways, and understanding feline body language for making life smoother.

Beyond the Videos

While her platform features cozy and funny moments, Mauren says the reality involves juggling multiple jobs, creating sponsored content, and caring for six cats. She notes that pet care has become significantly more expensive. Mauren hopes Cat Lady Tails encourages responsible pet ownership. She supports adoption, works with organizations like the ASPCA, speaks against declawing, and reminds followers that shelters are full of cats needing homes.

Her advice for prospective pet owners is simple and important. She has one message she wishes every future owner would hear. When asked who is in charge, Mauren does not hesitate. "It's their house," she says. "I just live here."
